About the Project
The Rochester Tree Ambassador Project engages our community in activities that highlight the benefits of trees, especially health benefits, and encourage the expansion of Rochester’s tree canopy.
Benefits of the Project
- Improved public knowledge of how trees positively impact health
- A growing community commitment to our urban tree canopy and tree equity
- Greater connection between neighbors, city government, and community organizations
- Research and evaluation of successful efforts to engage neighbors about community health and the environment
Tree Advocate Engage Neighbors
A team of “Tree Advocates” who engage neighbors, attend events, and promote the importance of trees in the city. Their training will prepare them to discuss the health benefits of trees, promote planting trees in the city, and serve as a connection between neighbors and the City of Rochester’s forestry department. The City of Rochester has identified this as an important role as they work to implement the Urban Forestry Master Plan.
Canopy Council Guide the Project
A “Canopy Council” of community advisors guides the growth and development of the Tree People Project. Members of this group are committed to the health of Rochester’s people and environment through their work or personal efforts. The Canopy Council works together to co-create a sustainable, impactful program that is inclusive and equitable.
Tree Champions Support the Work
“Tree Champions” are individuals, organizations, and businesses who are committed to the goals of the Tree Ambassador program. Through their contribution of time, talent, and treasure, they support the broad efforts of this program to increase the number of, and health of trees in the city, as well as our community’s awareness of why we need trees in our city and opportunities to experience those benefits
Community Events to Celebrate Trees
Events that bring neighbors together to learn about and celebrate our City’s trees. Tree walks, plantings, and picnics give everyone an opportunity to connect around our common interest in a healthy urban forest. Tree Ambassadors attend community events to share what they know about trees and encourage city residents to act.
This project is supported by the University of Rochester’s Institute for Human Health and the Environment.
